I had to get a futon home in the Escape.  Unfortunately, I could not close the liftgate.  This is how I got the futon home...

I had to cross some 2 foot bungee chords using the 4 anchor points near the liftgate.

   
Here are photos of the bottom and top anchor points.

  
Since I could not close the liftgate, I had to secure it.  My bungee set came with these looped chords with a rubber ball.  I snaked the bungee thru the liftgate latch and wrapped it around the trailer hitch.  Worked like a charm
